A proud life-long resident of South Dakota, Paul has made his home here in Yankton with wife Kathy for the past 44 years.

As educators, childcare providers, and parents, Paul and Kathy’s commitment to children and education is deep and personal. Paul spent 39 years as a secondary educator — 31 years of which were spent at Yankton High School, teaching English, history courses, and contemporary living. He also served as the debate coach and student council advisor. Like many teachers, Paul spent his summers working outside of the classroom to supplement his income. He worked in manufacturing, served on a kitchen line, and did his fair share of landscaping — all while Kathy offered childcare services out of their home and, later, at Mt. Marty University, caring for children for 35 years. Together, they raised two sons.

Paul has always made giving back to his community a priority. Paul has served as a volunteer and board member with several local organizations, including Yankton Area Arts, Connecting Artists, and Cramer-Kenyon Heritage Home. He is also a long-time and active member of the Knights of Columbus and Sacred Heart Church.

In retirement, Paul has remained involved in education. He continues to substitute for the Yankton School District. In 2021, Paul served on the S.D. Department of Education’s Social Studies Standards Committee. He also taught at Mt. Marty University.

Paul has developed a passion for photography in recent years. One of his favorite images to capture is the historic Meridian Bridge. For Paul, the bridge represents the best of Yankton — a time when the community united around a common challenge and shared vision and, despite the odds, worked together to build a bridge to ensure progress and prosperity.

Paul looks forward to bringing his perspective and lived experience — as well as your voice and concerns — to Pierre as your next District 18 House Representative.
